90210 is the new 90210

In Television by Heidi Nyburg on Monday, May 19, 2008

So here’ s a look at the “leaked” promo for the CW’s Beverly Hills 90210 spin off cleverly named 90210. By now every time you read the word “leaked” anywhere,  you should just automatically think “press release”.  The first thing we noticed about the new show is that the core cast of kids is smaller than the original cast.  Maybe that’s because the parents will have larger roles in this new version, kind of an OC-ish twist. That should be an interesting spin but we’ll still miss the solid and wise parenting skills of Jim and Cindy Walsh. Jim and Cindy could make you thankful for being grounded. As is par for the course with any new series aimed at upcoming hipster ‘tweens, the new 90210 will usher in a new wave of trendy tot names for the next generation of followers. Will the names Dixon and Silver sweep the toddler playgrounds the way Brandon and Dylan did in the late nineties? Only series renewal will tell.

Eww.. Series like 90210 and OC is just not my type =D I’d rather watch One Tree Hill. At least that show grows on you. Oh well.. It’s everyone’s preference.

Have TV producers just run out of ideas and any semblance of originality? I can’t say a series has ever been successful after it’s original run.

TV producers at the moment ran out of ideas and any impression of originality. I can’t say a series has ever been successful after it’s original sprint. This would be awesome.

I think those in 90210 now have a show called swingers. They start it by saying, do you know where your parents are. TV has just gone to mostly trash, especially when they cancel good shows like Jericho and others like it.

Same game, only the faces have changed. I gotta wonder though, why they bother keeping the same name. Is it even a brand that their demographic will know?

I loved the old 90210 when I was in high school. I can’t believe they are making a new one. Being a girl I might get sucked in to the soap opera drama of it all, but I don’t think they can ever beat the original. Think this one will be on as long as the original all the way until they have weddings and get married?!?

I hated 90210 after the second year on TV and I am sure to hate it now. And this is coming from someone related to a 90210 cast member (Lindsay Price) I think this show may last 7 erpsiodes at the most.

Is Hollywood really that devoid of new ideas and plots that they have to keep remaking things? No sequel or spin off will ever come close to the original 90210. I am sorry for the people involved but I really hope this show tanks quickly and is yanked off the air.

I never really got into it but I wonder if David will come back? I hear Brian Austin Green wasn’t asked to do the show but he could always save face by saying he’s in the Sarah Connor Chronicles Terminator. And I also hear that Tori Spelling is trying to get her husband on the show as well. I hope she doesn’t get her way. It would be so tacky.

Um, maybe I’ve just gotten older, but was the original this dorky? I watched the Youtube video and my first thought was that it was a spoof. What a stupid voice over. How cliche can you get with the cast. And then I found out it was for real. Holy crap.

Well, it looks like it’s a ratings hit… It’s kind of surprising because I didn’t think the “older” generation in their mid to late 30s would watch it. I mean, they have outgrown high school. And any younger than that would not get the hype. But what’s even more surprising is that the two lead females Garth and Doherty would get along! I guess whatever jobs they can get they’ll behave these days!

Although nothing will match the original, this “sequel” is pretty good. I like the way they used the original template but tweaked it just enough to make the storyline interesting.
